FtTP - Cesar Millan + John Edward

We had a friend over for dinner tonight. Within the course of our conversation, we came up with a strange idea for Frankensteining the Talent Pool - Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer, plus John Edward, the medium (he sees dead people). Here's the reasoning: Combining the two would allow for a medium to keep spirits in a "calm, submissive state." And if the spirits get bucky, the medium could just say, "Tsst, tsst," and put spirits in their place.

Trust me, the conversation was much funnier when we talked about it than how it's showing up here, especially because my hubby does this hilarious impression of Cesar's phrase "calm, submissive state." Here's the link for Cesar's own website. The one above is for his National Geographic show.

FtTP - Feist + Mika

Rianna has saved the day by sending me a blog post idea. Sometimes I just can't get into the mood to post something here - last night was just such a night - and it helps when I get a suggestion. I would have posted this Frankensteining the Talent Pool combo last night, but wanted to get Rianna's permission to do so first. So, here goes:

FtTP: Feist + Mika

I've discussed Mika here before. Lovely, upbeat music, he's got. I heard Feist through a commercial first and wondered who was performing. My husband looked it up and told me the name, which I promptly forgot. Then Rianna reminded me through her email last night. Feist, which sounds like it could be the name of a group, appears to be the name of a female performer. She has an ethereal sound, happy with a smidge of melancholy. Check out her 1, 2, 3, 4 on YouTube. This is the song from the commercial. I'll tell you, she and Mika could certainly have a fashion-sharing party. They both appear to enjoy dancing, too.

Thanks, Rianna!

FtTP - Richard Cheese

This is super cool - a Frankensteining the Talent Pool dream come true. Richard Cheese has a spot on his website wherein readers/listeners can suggest songs for him to "swankify." Of course I couldn't pass up the opportunity. I suggested he swankify Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" and something, anything from Dave Matthews Band. I narrowed it down to four, though - "I Did It," "What Would You Say," "Halloween," and "Louisiana Bayou." Let the swankification begin. Now I'll have to wait and see if these songs are swank-worthy.

Here are a couple of other FtTPs concerning Mr. Richard Cheese.

Cheese + Micheal Buble (Buble has the sense of humor to pull this off.)

Cheese opening for the Rev. Horton Heat.

Everything goes with Cheese.

FtTP - Blue Man Group + Dave Matthews

Here's a Frankensteining the Talent Pool combination that never even dawned on me. I was poking around on YouTube and found a video of the song "Sing Along" by Blue Man Group and Dave Matthews. Super cool. The combo really works.

FtTP - Buble + Setzer + Aguilera + Stefani

I've mentioned portions of this Frankensteining the Talent Pool combination before, but I've expanded it and added a fourth. Michael Buble was on Oprah the other day and he looks like he's having a blast while singing. Brian Setzer displays the same sort of joy in performing. Combine these two with Gwen Stefani (who has performed with Setzer before) and Christiana Aguilera (think of her '40s inspired song & video "Candyman") and we'd have a winning combination.

Addendum (May 20, 2007): How's about we add Rod Stewart to this mix? We'd have a PBS pledge week special for sure.

FTTP - Joss Stone + Corinne Bailey Rae

A Frankensteining the Talent Pool idea came to me yesterday after hearing Corinne Bailey Rae on the radio:

Corinne Bailey Rae + Joss Stone

Don't quite know why. Both are from the UK, both have been described as soulful singers. Maybe it's nothing more than that.

FtTP - John Waters & Quentin Tarantino - NOT!

I've not posted a Frankensteining the Talent Pool suggestion in some time, and today I'm doing an anti-FtTP. I saw the movie director John Waters on a commercial last night. He's going to be hosting a TV show. Waters is best known for his movie Pink Flamingos, which has to be seen to be believed. It is definitely not for children, and frankly, it's not a movie for most adults, either. After the Waters commercial, I saw a movie trailer for Quentin Tarantino, who is known for bizarre, psychotic violence in his movies. Seeing the two in such close proximity, I wondered what a movie directed by the both of them would look like. And then I really thought about it and decided that the world probably doesn't need two crazy creepo creatives teaming up to unleash their twisted ideas upon each other or the rest of us. Makes me shudder to think about it.

FtTP - Dave Matthews Band + Tainted Love

While writing, I like to listen to music. So, I was listening to Soft Cell's Tainted Love today and thought of the most unlikely Frankensteining the Talent Pool combination. I'd like to hear the Masters of Complication, Dave Matthews Band, play Tainted Love, just to see what they'd do with it, especially seeing as how they don't use synthesizers. Could they dial it down a notch and do some creative instrumental substitution? Could they bring themselves to play a candy-pop song? I wonder . . . .

January 13, 2007 - Addendum: I heard Tainted Love playing in Wal-Mart last night. They played the whole version, not the truncated one. You know, if DMB were to perform this, with Dave's growly voice, the song would become dangerous, rather than sultry. Just my opinion.

FtTP - OK Go + Savion Glover

Here's another Frankensteining the Talent Pool from my brother:

OK Go, the band made famous by their treadmill dance + Savion Glover, tap dancer extraordinaire.

Match made in heaven? I think so.

FtTP - Kari Byron + Damien Hirst

I talked to my brother last night and asked him if he had any Frankensteining the Talent Pool suggestions. He came up with several, which I will dole out to you kind readers. Here's the first he thought of:

Kari Byron, the cute red-head on MythBusters, is a sculptor. My brother would like to see her team up with the sculptor Damien Hirst. Kari has some really interesting stuff, very well done. Damien is known for suspending dead animals in transparent boxes in some substance. His best-known work is of a tiger shark. According to Wikipedia, his work has the second highest value of any living artist. I don't know. I think I'd much prefer to buy something of Kari's.

FtTP - Stephen Colbert + The Decemberists

Okay, I didn't think of this Frankensteining of the Talent Pool, The Decemberists did. They've challenged Stephen Colbert to a guitar-off (is that even a term?). The contest is on the Colbert Report in half-an-hour. I've gotta see this.

FtTP - Beck + Sonic Youth

This just in from my bro - a suggestion for Frankensteining the Talent Pool. I'll let him take the stage . . . .

Okay Seester Mary...let me know what you think about this FtTP suggestion...
Beck & Sonic Youth
It would be interesting to see what could be produced by the fertile minds of Beck & Thurston Moore et. al. My biggest fear is that, at worst, it would be like any one of those crappy all-star B-movies that you see on TV as filler. Personally, I think it would be one of the coolest musical mind-blowing experiences ever.
Cheers,
Nick

Can't say as I know diddly bupkis about Sonic Youth, or how they'd sound with Beck, but I like it when people share their FtTP ideas with me. Rock on, bro!

FtTP - Mike Mangini + Carter Beauford

Really brilliant drummers make me want to get a trap set. I'm well acquainted with Carter Beauford's work, having listened long and hard to the Dave Matthew's Band. My husband recently (okay, yesterday) introduced me to the drumming of Mike Mangini, who has recorded with guitarist Steve Vai. You know that song, "Dueling Banjos" from the movie Deliverance? I'd like to see Carter Beauford and Mike Mangini perform dueling drums. How killer would that be?

By the way, the name links hook up to drum solos by each guy on YouTube.

FtTP - Steffan Lessard + Steve Vai

I haven't posted a Frankensteining the Talent Pool in a while, so here's one worth considering: Steve Vai, guitar genius, with Stefan Lessard, supposed wunderkind. I say supposed because Lessard (a.k.a. "Fonzy") joined Dave Matthews Band when he was sixteen, so the guy's obviously got talent. Trouble is, every one else in DMB is so talented that Lessard's bass line is more often than not overshadowed by the other instruments. (A hint of his ability comes through on the song "Hunger for the Great Light," for which he wrote the guitar line.) I'd like to pull Lessard from the group just to see what he's got. Why would I put him with Steve Vai? I think the personalities of the two would compliment each other. Also, Vai is very good at allowing each instrument to shine, including the bass.

FtTP - Canadian Healthcare + U.S. Healthcare

This post, too, is in honor of my brother. During our hour-long phone conversation tonight, we got to talking about healthcare systems. He suggested this Frankensteining the Talent Pool idea: For perfection in healthcare, combine the best of the Canadian & U.S. systems. Use the universal system of Canada so that everyone is guaranteed care, but use the speed of the U.S. system so that people wouldn't have to wait too long for care. I'm sure all it'll take is the wave a magic wand . . . .

Wonky Bloggy

I don't know if you noticed, but my blog is a bit different as of yesterday. Blogger is adding new features and having everyone switch over to Blogger Beta. One of the new things I love about the program is the ability to add tags to my posts. Blogger calls them labels and they are at the bottom of each post, just above my signature line.

I talked to my brother - actually called to wish him a belated happy birthday - and asked him what he liked about the blog & what he didn't. He likes the Frankensteining the Talent Pool posts. He also likes that most of my posts are relatively short. He doesn't like my constant mention of a particular marketer, who shall remain nameless for this post in honor of my brother.

One wonky thing happened to my blog in the switch over. In my profile, I'm now 250 years old and it lists me as having been born in the year of the Rat. Not so, I'm a sheep. Am I 250 years old? Well, you'll just have to figure that out yourself.

FtTP - Beck + Anyone else

I caught the tail end of Saturday Night Live last night and saw Beck's performance of a song I'll call "Clap Hands," because that could be the title, but I'm not sure. Beck is flaming originality incarnate. "Clap Hands" was a stripped down ditty wherein Beck played a cheesy, cheap-looking small guitar - truly, it looked like a toy - and his bandmates played flatware on a table and on the dishes on the table. Catchy, it was.

Beck was featured in the September 2006 issue of Wired Magazine. He's reinventing the concept of an album in the digital age, deciding that a static 13-track CD just isn't going to cut it. With his new album, Guero, he created a variety of versions of songs for consumers and provided stickers with his CDs so that users can customize the cover. For his forward-thinking attitude, I'd Frankenstein the Talent Pool by adding Beck to anyone else in any other field just to see what he'd come up with.

FtTP - Say Goodbye + Very

This Frankensteining the Talent Pool is about two songs that are soul mates. The first of these to make its way into my consciousness was "Say Goodbye" by the Dave Matthews Band. It's on their album Crash.

A sampling of the lyrics:

So here we are tonight, you and me together
The storm outside, the fire is bright
And in your eyes I see what's on my mind
You've got me wild turned around inside

The other song is "Very" by Moby, from his Hotel album. The song is sung by Laura Dawn, who has a voice so hot it could melt iron.

A sample of the lyrics:

Now, we will make it, just you, you and me
Soon, we will take it, just you, you and me
Hey, it's cold out there, so come inside
Hey, it's warm in here, so come inside

As soon as I heard "Very," I wanted to hear it blended with "Say Goodbye." Laura's voice with Dave's voice would be an interesting contrast, as would the two styles of music. Alas, I am not a musician, so this mash-up isn't going to occur through any skill of mine. (Plus, there's that thing called copyright that keeps me from going there.)

FtTP - Billy Mays + HeadOn

You may not know him by name, but surely you've seen Billy Mays in action. He's the vein-popping shouting dude on the Oxy-Clean commercials. I saw him on said commercial this evening and had a brainstorm that could lead to the general insanity of the entire population. What if Billy Mays was hawking HeadOn?

FtTP - Corinne Bailey Rae + Michael Buble

Corinne Bailey Rae was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live last night. (Thanks, SNL - now my youngest son is eating whole heads of lettuce because of you.) Corinne has an ease and grace about her that matches my definition of what the Buddha was like. Her voice is rich, smooth, and sweet, like milk chocolate. Delicious. And, she has the warmest smile. She seems genuinely delighted to be performing.

Michael Buble shares Corinne's ease and comfort in front of an audience, along with a satiny voice. The two of them also have websites that give visitors a preview of their music. This pairing would be a natural.
