The Universe Is Taunting Me

The Universe is taunting me. I've decided I want to work with the Dave Matthews Band (DMB) on a project. How's that for ambitious? And practically impossible? So, of course, that's what I want to do. I, who never goes anywhere, went to St. Paul in July for a digitization workshop at the Minnesota Historical Society. (Forgive me for repeating myself. I’ve already posted about this.) My hotel was the Holiday Inn River Centre, just down the hill a couple blocks away. Kitty-corner from the hotel is the Excel Energy Center. When I got home from three days worth of workshop, I went online and discovered that DMB had played a private concert for Best Buy in the Excel Energy Center a mere two days before I was in St. Paul.

It gets better. Hubby and I are going to Atlanta September 5 - 9 for an annual meeting/conference/awards banquet related to my work. My brother, who lived in Atlanta for 9 months, suggested I visit the Piedmont Park area of the city. He said it was refurbished by members of the gay community and it's a congenial neighborhood. (Don’t you just love how gays refurbish and revitalize blighted areas? I realize that not all gays are good with interior and exterior design, but enough of them are that the generalization sticks, and we’re all the better for their work.) Okay, fine, add a walk through Piedmont Park to the gotta do while in Atlanta list. So I go online last night and check the DMB website. There's a new announcement posted, a contest to win tickets to a DMB/Allman Brothers concert in Atlanta on September 8 - the night of the awards banquet. Guess where it's being held? Piedmont Park. The Universe is totally fucking with me, I tell you.

Stop Lights Revisited

I told my co-worker about the Scientologist and the stop light and she told me that when she was a kid, she and her siblings would chant at stop lights in order to get them to turn green as they approached. Often, this seemed to work. Incidentally, my co-worker is not a Scientologist.

I was thinking more about "The Secret," specifically about the part that says to only ask the universe for what you want once, because if you ask more than once, that means you don't believe the universe will deliver. I can't buy this. I think that asking more than once helps to cement your decision in your mind. It gives you the belief you need and gives you the opportunity to readjust your desires, if necessary. According to that book chapter I referenced on thickening thought forms, the act of repeating your desire made it stronger and signaled to the universe that you were really serious about bringing your wish into reality. This continual feedback also serves as a protective function. We wouldn't want all of the stuff we think about to come true instantly. Think about all the craziness that goes through your head when you're extremely mad. We'd be in for a mess if it was made manifest.

So, go ahead and ask more than once if you feel the need. If nothing else, the sheer repetition will provide you with the belief that your wish will be granted. Wish well.

Resolutions

We're mid-way through January, a time when most people are breaking their New Year's resolutions, and I have given nary a thought to coming up with one. I figure, if there's something you want to do, why wait until some special date to resolve to do it? Just do it. (Sorry, Nike.) There are some goals I'd like to meet during the year, but I don't see them as resolutions that I must absolutely get done. They're just part of the overall list of goals I've set to reach before I die. (Did I mention that I plan to live to be in my nineties? When I first decided I'd make it to my nineties, I thought 92 would be a good age. Every year since then, the age creeps up. There's too much living to do and not enough time to do it. I'm thinking 97 sounds pretty good.)

My biggest goal for the year is to finish a book project that's been three years in the works. I'd also like to knit a pair of socks, which is something I thought would be nice to do last year, but it didn't happen. Unlike typical New Year's resolutions, did I drop the goal completely? Heck no! I carried it forward. I'm also willing to let the goal evolve to encompass a reasonable facsimile of the original goal. See, I live by the notion that you've got to give the Universe a little leeway in helping you to live your dreams. A little wiggle room. So, I might not get to a pair of socks, but I'll be plenty happy if I can knit a pair of mittens or fingerless gloves.
